Cornucopia
The setting is summer and a female has just won the boxing match which is part of the male and female hares mating ritual. The corn, which is falling after being kicked up, represents fertility and the hare is the fertility goddess in Celtic belief. Corn is part of the hare’s diet during the summer months.
Joanna May is based in Wiltshire, UK and has become well known for her Hare paintings. In 2006 she was invited by the BBC to talk about her work and love of the hare on ‘Spring Watch’.
