Gemini is an air sign and the two hares (for the twins) are floating in the sky. Gemini’s are quick and adaptable and don’t mind change so the hares are in positions of speed running at full pelt.
There is a streak of silver behind the second hare; this represents mercury, the ruler of Gemini, making them swift, quick on uptake and mobile. The constellation of Gemini is clearly mapped out in the sky with the stars Castor and Pollux.
The hares are floating above the Town of Marlborough at night; you can identify all the buildings clearly. There is a small square on the pavement which is an A board pointing in the direction of Hughenden Yard where the ‘Joanna May Studio Gallery’ was.
Gemini happens to be Joanna May’s star sign and the smaller hare in the sky is in the shape of her logo that appears on the back of her paintings.
Gemini was painted first because it was going to be filmed with the artist working on it on ‘Spring Watch’ with Bill Oddie and Kate Humble and the programmed was aired in early June the time of Gemini.
